2023 Elections: Big Wins Across the Country

November 10th, 2023

While there’s still a ton of work ahead, we want to celebrate all the incredible work that our colleagues developed and executed, collectively leading to some hugely important Election Day results and creating real momentum going into 2024.

Together, our Campaigns & Elections team supported nearly 100 races across 15 states. From helping elect mayors, judges and more to advancing reproductive freedom and access to voting in states across the country.

Big Wins Across the Country

We’re so proud to have helped elect a new Congressman, mayors, county officials, city councilmembers, judges, new members of the VA House and Senate, and pass a ballot proposition. Here are a few highlights:

Congressman Gabe Amo (RI-1): In Rhode Island, BerlinRosen served as direct mail consultants for the newest member of Congress, Gabe Amo. A veteran of the Obama and Biden White Houses, Amo, the son of African immigrants, will be the first Black Congressman from Rhode Island.

County Executive Sara Innamorato (Allegheny County, PA): In Pennsylvania, we served as the media consultants for numerous races, including the Allegheny County Executive Race. Pittsburgh and its suburbs have never had a female County Executive, until now. Sara Innamorato was outspent by nearly 4:1 but still held on. Check out the video our team made for her campaign created here.

Open Democracy PAC (WI and PA): Our team worked to support elected officials with election responsibilities in key counties in Wisconsin (this spring) and Pennsylvania (this fall). We won Democratic majorities on the Luzerne County Council and Bucks County Commission to protect election integrity.

Flipping Mayors Races in “Barn Red” Indiana: Hoosier Democrats had a big night and BerlinRosen was right in the middle of it. We were lead strategists and media consultants for new Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun (a millennial Army Ranger and the son of Cambodian refugees), re-elected Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and South Bend Mayor James Mueller, and won three seats on the Indianapolis City-County Council.

Winning Big Open Seats and Protecting Incumbents in Virginia: It was all on the line in Virginia and our team was right there. We elected two new members of the General Assembly—Delegate Kannan Srinivasan and Senator Suhas Subramanyan—who will be on the front lines of protecting abortion in Virginia.

Stopping Moms for Liberty in Their Tracks: Across the country, our team worked to protect the freedom to learn—and we won big school board races in Bucks and York County PA, Albemarle County VA, Mounds View, MN and Albuquerque, NM.

Beating Back the Narrative in New York: After some tough losses for NY in 2022, BerlinRosen legislative candidates won races in key swing counties across the state–including wins in Nassau County where we elected the first AAPI Town Councilor in North Hempstead, and wins in Rockland County, and Dutchess County.

Advancing Reproductive Freedom

The team supported a coalition of reproductive rights and democracy groups in Pennsylvania who were drawing attention to a high-stakes state Supreme Court race with implications for abortion access and voting rights in Pennsylvania for a decade. Highlights of this work include local and national coverage over the course of the past month that spotlighted the importance of the race, including local coverage in The Keystone and the Bucks County Beacon and national coverage in The Huffington Post and The Guardian – and we’re so proud that this culminated in a win for Judge Daniel McCaffery!

Empowering Voting Access

Our team has been supporting the Fair Elections Center in its work to ensure every voter has a voice in every election..A highlight of our work includes uplifting Fair Election Center’s legal work challenging whether governors in Virginia and Kentucky have the authority to deny voting rights to people with former felony convictions – an effort that was profiled last month by The New York Times.

We’re so proud to support the NAACP on initiatives such as its Voter Protection Hub to ensure Black voter engagement is high in the face of ongoing election subversion nationwide. Our work included highlighting the Association’s work protecting and mobilizing Black voters in select state-wide 2023 elections and ahead of the 2024 Presidential election.
