How We Got Involved in the 2022 Election

November 11th, 2022

What an election cycle! BerlinRosen brought its brand of 360-degree, non-stop, rock-til-you-drop client service to the arena. Everything was on the line, and—with our clients—we left nothing out in the field.

  • Electing more than 100 candidates and passing critical ballot measures—with paid media in every channel.
  • Elevating the most important issues in earned and social media.
  • Mobilizing young people, women and people of color to vote.
  • Supporting organizations committed to the essential work of protecting our democracy.

Supporting Democratic candidates

This cycle, our Campaigns & Elections team supported over 170 candidates across 26 states. Highlights of this intensive, results-driven work include:

  • We played a key role in electing five new Democratic members of Congress this year: Greg Casar (TX-35), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), Dan Goldman (NY-10), Summer Lee (PA-12) and Pat Ryan (NY-18).
  • In Georgia, we made history with direct mail and digital ads, electing Ruwa Romman, the first Palestinian elected official in Georgia and first Muslim woman in the State House and Farooq Mughal, the first Pakistani elected official in GA.
  • Our teams helped win statewide races—re-electing Colorado AG Phil Weiser and Minnesota AG Keith Ellison, and electing Stephanie Thomas as Connecticut’s Secretary of State.
  • Four years ago, we helped our client, Justice & Public Safety PAC, elect progressive prosecutors in two of Texas’ largest jurisdictions—Joe Gonzalez in Bexar County and John Creuzot in Dallas County. This year, with the right wing coming after them, we led paid media across channels to help re-elect Gonzalez and Creuzot.

Turning states blue with caucuses & progressive organizations

Pennsylvania and Minnesota: While some of the races are still being counted (looking at you AZ), we’ve already seen historic wins with our work supporting the States Project and Forward Majority. Working with the PA House Democratic Caucus, we helped win 11 of 13 races as core strategists producing direct mail, TV ads and digitals ads. We’re so proud to have helped flip Houses in PA and MN, which will be controlled by Democrats for the first time in 40 years!

Arizona: The AZ Senate has been in Republican hands for 22 years and now, while the votes are still being counted, it’s a pure tossup. Our team led the paid and earned media work for the AZ DLCC and PAC for America’s Future and we’re on the verge of flipping the chamber.

Michigan: As part of our work for the PAC for America’s Future, we won 12 of 14 contested races and supported flipping the House to Democrats for the first time in 40 years! In the MI Senate, we’ve won 5 of the 7 races we’re supporting there, with one still too close to call.

Georgia: We drove a statewide voter mobilization program for ProGeorgia c3 table. And the New Georgia Project and New Georgia Project Action Fund teams continued to shape how GA organizing and politics are covered in the national press—work that will continue as we go into the runoff!

Texas: Our Texas Civil Rights Project team drove media in the lead up to and late into the night on election day—including around emergency litigation to extend voting hours.

Supporting progressive ballot measures

California, Vermont and Michigan voters affirmed reproductive rights in their state constitutions and Kentucky & Montana voters defeated measures that would have eliminated the right to abortion and criminalized providers. Our Abortion Care Network team worked closely with the owner of Kentucky’s sole independent abortion clinic to elevate the impact of abortion bans in the state, while the SisterSong team landed broadcast appearances to discuss abortion as an issue on the ballot.

For the Movement for Black Lives we also worked on the referendum against slavery in Texas and codifying abortion rights into constitutions in Tennessee and Michigan.

The GLSEN team highlighted the stakes for LGBTQ+ students and democracy this midterm cycle as extremists pushed anti-LGBTQ censorship measures.

Mobilizing voters and engaging poll workers

Through a major integrated campaign across earned media, digital strategy and advertising, our team helped Power the Polls recruit over 265,000 poll workers across the nation. From spotlighting the poll worker shortage to powering an impactful email program that has helped to engage (and re-engage) hundreds of thousands of people, we helped energize poll worker recruits for the election.

We helped Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law – Election Protection ensure Black voters in target states knew their rights. With the Black Women’s Leadership Collective, Higher Heights PAC and the NAACP we worked to make sure Black women were mobilized, energized and engaged heading into the 2022 midterms.

We ran a civic engagement program with United We Dream Action that reached over 4.5 million young, immigrant, Latinx and low-propensity voters across Florida, Texas, Arizona and Nevada. We partnered with 1199 SEIU to build state-of-the-art digital voter education tools and helped SEIU Wisconsin re-elect Gov. Tony Evers.

For the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, our team executed a comprehensive digital ads program to more than 60,000 members to get out the vote for pro-union and pro-worker candidates. And we executed a winning multi-district IE program for the Communications Workers of America
